Study finds that Women use Facebook to compete for men (video).

I have always wondered about peoples' posting habits on Facebook. I know of some people that hardly ever go on Facebook and have a meager 10 pictures of themselves posted. Other people have thousands of pictures of themselves and are continually adding more as if they are scanning them into Facebook using some high tech barcode scanner . Occasionally even using a mirror to create a cliche self portrait of immortalized vanity. Just reading this you might assume that women would be the culprits of the latter, more so than men ~ yes?

Apparently this assumption is scientifically verifiable. Research from universities in New York, Texas, and Hawaii, published in a journal called Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking seem to suggest that women who tend to judge their own self-worth more on appearance tend to post more pictures of themselves on Facebook. The study's results suggest they do this to compete for attention, mostly from men. The study also found that women post around 5 times more pictures than men ~ no surprises there either.

The researchers looked at time spent online, the breadth of an individual's social network, and the number of pictures shared. The average age of the research participants was 23.3. Of the 311 participants, 49.8 percent were female. Subjects completed a questionnaire "measuring their contingencies of self worth." They were also asked about their typical behavior on Facebook.

Could it be troubling times that so many young women quantify their self worth via their physical appearance. It comes as no surprise to me because these days for a woman to become famous she can do so more rapidly with her body than with actual talent. You can name but a few woman that haven't even the petrol fumes of talent but got our attention by whipping up a sex tape, thereby shooting themselves to unbridled fame ~ cough cough Kim Kardashian. Provided the status quo is maintained, prepare to see young women post millions of pictures of themselves whoring around the social networks for attention.
