Vogue Website showing  "SLAVE EARRINGS"
Fashion magazine Vogue has sparked a worldwide race row after it ran a trend story on what it labelled 'slave earrings'. Vogue Italia website recalled the style of earrings worn by 'women of color' who were brought to the southern United States during the slave trade. The controversial article went on to refer to the current hooped gold styles as a 'latest interpretation which is pure freedom.......(Original Slave Earrings article)

Firstly, Vogue should know that you can't mention certain words without illiciting some kind a response from somebody angry somewhere. The word "slave" would definitely be one of those. The concept of slavery is what makes it impossible for non-black people to say so many words without getting their ass beat. The question is....

Is the use of the term Slave Earrings this worth rioting over?

A Slave woman, wearing the ear pieces that inspired this latest racial row...
If these so called "Slave Earrings" were truly and genuinely inspired by what slave women wore at the time as an expression of creativity then that is ART. If some asshole said wouldn't it be funny if we made fun of slaves, replicated their "fashion" and dressed up tall, skinny white women in it then that is a different story. High fashion is known for taking creativity to it's limits and using any source of inspiration to come up with any number of ridiculous designs and outfits that nobody normal can wear in public. If you are upset JUST because of the the use of the word "Slave" and not the principal that the industry is making an unsavory part of history "fashionable" you need to get a life and/or jump off bridge. Although the earrings have now been renamed "Ethnic Earings" does that really change anything? Should you be content? They were still inspired by exactly the same thing and they are still on display and being sold for a profit. So changing the name to "Ethnic Earrings" is actually a victory for nobody. The violating principals at work have just been swept under the rug.

Fashion is art, by it's very nature it interprets elements and theme of our reality and depicts them in a stylistic form. Sometimes you won't like where the inspiration comes from but artists should have the right interpret any part of reality and attempt to make art. The sad thing is that had some black run institution did the same thing, it would have been labeled an "expression of lost culture" or "An expression of freedom" ~ some crap like that ~ The concept of inspiration does not have a racial component to it until a racist applies one to it in retrospect. Besides, why interpret this in the most negative way possible. Personally, I find the style of ethnic earrings to be beautiful and one of the points of culture preserved after a people were stripped from their lands and raped of all their culture and integrity. Damn right they should be celebrated...
