Vogue article on 'Slave Earrings' causes Stupid Racism Row.
Vogue Website showing "SLAVE EARRINGS" |
Firstly, Vogue should know that you can't mention certain words without illiciting some kind a response from somebody angry somewhere. The word "slave" would definitely be one of those. The concept of slavery is what makes it impossible for non-black people to say so many words without getting their ass beat. The question is....
Is the use of the term Slave Earrings this worth rioting over?

Fashion is art, by it's very nature it interprets elements and theme of our reality and depicts them in a stylistic form. Sometimes you won't like where the inspiration comes from but artists should have the right interpret any part of reality and attempt to make art. The sad thing is that had some black run institution did the same thing, it would have been labeled an "expression of lost culture" or "An expression of freedom" ~ some crap like that ~ The concept of inspiration does not have a racial component to it until a racist applies one to it in retrospect. Besides, why interpret this in the most negative way possible. Personally, I find the style of ethnic earrings to be beautiful and one of the points of culture preserved after a people were stripped from their lands and raped of all their culture and integrity. Damn right they should be celebrated...
