100 simple things we take for granted: 1# Bipedalism

There is no story here, I just woke up in a bed this morning and thought to myself, "man, it sure is good to have a bed." Then I realized just how useful a bed actually is...so here goes. I'll add one thing to this list every week or so. So here is numero uno!

Most of us are able to walk. In fact, in a life time the average human being spends about a year ( 8766 hours) walking. We instinctively take our first steps after just a couple of months of life. Prior to that, we live a miserable four legged existence using crawling as our preferred method of transportation. Thanks to years of evolution (or God making us this way ~ if that's the tale you believe). We are able to walk upright, freeing our arms and raising us off the ground to see the world afar.

Yet, imagine a world in which we were perpetual crawlers, our hands would be forever plagued with helping us maintain our balance. We would also use more energy to move so we'd almost always be hungry, fatigued and tired like a white girl on The Atkins Diet. You would not be able to do simple things like go bowling, play darts or chug a beer. Ladies, forget about that sexy new outfit you bought for your hot date because after crawling your way to the restaurant, you will look like you lost a mud fight with a wild boar. The event would have to be renamed "The Avon Crawl for Cancer" (ouch!!) and while doing your bit to raise awareness for breast cancer you'd look like an ass doing so.

I am willing to bet that if you are able to walk, you walked great distances today and took it for granted. Maybe you even accelerated the walk into a slow jog or a run to catch the bus. So next time you get up to walk, think about how unappreciative you are of this process. Better yet, throw a party this weekend in honor of the process of walking.
