The Zim Dollar, whose value is akin to wallpaper this days. |
Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister Tendai Biti admitted that at one point last month, the Zimbabwean government only had $217 dollars in its public accounts. For a country of nearly 13 million people that amounts to only .001 of a penny per person.
"Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 [left] in government coffers," Tendai Biti told journalists in the capital, Harare last month. "The government finances are in a paralysis state at the present moment. We are failing to meet our targets..." the bewildered minister continued.
This report came amidst claims that Zimbabwe was going through a slow economic recovery. However, with virtual international isolation barring the entry of many foreign investors and domestic instability causing many current investors to leave, the end to Zimbabwe's peril is not in sight.
