Is the Pen Mightier than the Sword?
By Africanlegend
This is hands down one of my favorite Geico advertisements but having retarded friends makes everything all the more interesting because sometimes they just don't get it. I watched this advertisement with my buddy who we can just refer to as Dumbass and the first thing he said was,
"No way, dude if I was in a fight and they offered me a Pen or a Knife, I'd definitely take the sword."(promotional pens)
I explainined that he had probably misinterpreted the meaning of the phrase and therefore the irony of the advertisement. I also asked myself how exactly it is I came upon regarding this person as a friend. I immediately felt the need to enlighten the small minority of people that have chosen to take the phrase literally. So get out your pens and pads and start taking notes (GOPromos notepads)
'The pen is mightier than the sword' was coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in for his play Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy, 1839:
The idiom 'the pen is mightier than the sword' means that words and communication are more powerful than wars and fighting.True, This! -
Beneath the rule of men entirely great,
The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold
The arch-enchanters wand! - itself a nothing! -
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyse the Caesars, and to strike
The loud earth breathless! - Take away the sword -
States can be saved without it!
The phrase has nothing to do with equipping one side with a pen and the other with a sword because pending idiocy greater than the one that caused me to write this article, the guy with the sword should win at least 9 times out of 10,
