Maria del Mar Arjona trying to smuggle Edwin Valdemar Artiaga Perez out of prison in a suitcase.
In Chetumal, Mexico police reported that a 19-year-old woman, Maria del Mar Arjona, was caught trying to sneak her common-law-husband, Edwin Valdemar Artiaga Perez, out of an Eastern Quintana Roo State prison in a suitcase following a conjugal visit. Arjona and Perez conjured up a brilliantly low tech plan in hopes that Perez would avoid serving out his 20 year sentence. Perez was to curl himself up in the fetal position, stuff himself into a black suitcase and have his wife wheel him out of prison. Perez's dress code obviously didn't factor in the consequences of capture as Perez was scantily dressed in only a pair of socks and tighty whities.

Spokesman Gerardo Campos reported that staff checked the bag of 19 year old Arjona when she appeared suspiciously nervous and her suitcase seemed unreasonably bulky. This is evidence that it may be prudent to go on serious weight lose diet before attempting such a stunt. A little junk in the trunk can be the difference between a clean break and media-worth capture.

Ramirez is serving a 20-year sentence for a 2007 conviction for illegal weapons possession. Arjona was arrested and charges are pending.
