Crack Down on Illegal Hotels in New York

AL | 9:27 PM |

You associate New York with the finest of restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. Famous Hotels in New York City like the Hilton Waldorf Astoria and Omni Berkshire Hotel paint the New York skies with their glory. What we don't typically associate New York City with is slum-like hotel accommodation that even illegal aliens sneaking across the border would complain about. Conditions not sanitary and proper enough even for the rats in Ratatouille.

Officials are using new laws to raid, document and shutter illegal hotels. Some of these accommodation options looked similar to the type that could be seen in  SlumDog Millionaire.

The inspections came after a new law took affect May 1 that closed loopholes in the existing code governing short-term rentals. The measure bans rentals that are less than 30 days and says the use of even one apartment for transients is illegal. Before, a majority of the building had to be occupied by transients in order for that to be the case.

The New York Hostel 104, on East 105th Street, The International Student Center on West 88th Street and MacDougal Street Synagogue were among the list of hotels sited for infractions. Those infractions included, overcrowded buildings that in some instances contained hazardous materials or conditions worse than those found in the dilapidated Favalas of Brazil in City of God. All of the hotels mentioned above were given partial or full vacate orders as they were deemed to be illegal transient hotels.
